Machine learning reduces microscope data processing time from months to just seconds

Ever since the world's first ever microscope was invented in 1590 by Hans and Zacharias Janssen--a Dutch father and son--our curiosity for what goes on at the tiniest scales has led to development of increasingly powerful devices. Fast forward to 2021, we not only have optical microscopy methods that allow us to see tiny particles in higher resolution than ever before, we also have non-optical techniques, such as scanning force microscopes, with which researchers can construct detailed maps of a range of physical and chemical properties. Institute for Bioengineering of Catalonia (IBEC)'s Nanoscale Bioelectrical Characterization group, led by UB Professor Gabriel Gomila, in collaboration with members of the IBEC's Nanoscopy for Nanomedicine group, have been analyzing cells using a special type of microscopy called Scanning Dielectric Force Volume Microscopy, an advanced technique developed in recent years with which they can create maps of an electrical physical property called the dielectric constant. Each of the biomolecules that make up cells--that is, lipids, proteins and nucleic acids--has a different dielectric constant, so a map of this property is basically a map of cell composition. The technique that they developed has an advantage over the current gold standard optical method, which involves applying a fluorescent dye that can disrupt the cell being studied.

People across the world will soon put on scary makeup, terrifying masks and spooky costumes in honor of Halloween, but an algorithm is capable of transforming you into a flesh-eating zombie in just seconds. The website, called MakeMeAZombie,' stems from Toonify's ability to transform portraits into fun-loving cartoons, but has been redesigned to make users look like the undead. The algorithm was trained on a sample of 300 pictures from the internet of people wearing zombie masks and makeup, which were then combined with images of traditional human faces to teach it how to map the ghoulish features. The resulting image shows the person with angry, beady eyes, a mouth of rotten teeth and skin that appears to be decaying. MakeMeAZombie is the brainchild of Josh Brown Kramer, who is a senior data science consultant for Lincoln-based medical AI developer Ocuvera, and has been working on the system for nearly one year.

Artificial intelligence is used during video games and virtual reality to create 3D objects of people and objects. But typically it requires special equipment when filming in order to transfer the video of someone into a 3D figure. New video software is able to take the footage and transfer it into the model in seconds from just one angle. A minute-and-a-half long video shows how the algorithm is able to transform the images of men and women into a 3D character after they turn around themselves, Science Magazine reported.


China's Answer to Google Can Clone Your Voice Within Just Seconds of Hearing It

The Google of China, Baidu, has just released a white paper showing its latest development in artificial intelligence (AI): a program that can clone voices after analyzing even a seconds-long clip, using a neural network. Not only can the software mimic an input voice, but it can also change it to reflect another gender or even a different accent. You can listen to some of the generated examples here, hosted on GitHub. Previous iterations of this technology have allowed voice cloning after systems analyzed longer voice samples. In 2017, the Baidu Deep Voice research team introduced technology that could clone voices with 30 minutes of training material.
